The original Hipstamatic 100 camera was invented by Bruce and Winston Dorbowski in the 1980's. It was based on older, cheaper, plastic film cameras. Unfortunately, the sales didn't reach the hopes of the brothers selling less than 200 cameras total. Little did they know that an iPhone app based on their invention would sell to 1.4 million people by the year 2010. Users can purchase different lens's and film to accompany the camera app that will create many different effects that digital has not been able to recapture from
film photography. The first well-known professional series done with this new camera app was by photographer, Damon Winter. He used the iPhone app to document a group of soldiers in Afghanistan. He stated how easy it was to use, transport, and carry around, while it also helped the subjects more comfortable and at ease. If Winter carried around a huge digital camera, the picture would not come out with the same mood.
Here is the link to the website, which contains much more information on the specifics of the application, and shows examples and communities you can research.
Damon Winter endured some serious criticism for his use of the app. Furthermore it prompted a discussion about the future of photojournalism.
